Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford became attracted to acting in her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that this school wasn't right for her. Ford then applied for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993, but she already made a TV appearance in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate would also frequently work in the theatre, and later joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
